A friend sent me an illuminating table that does a nice job of adding perspective to something I’ve written about several times here – California’s stunning reduction in its use of Colorado River water.
agency | 2002 | 2019 | change |
---|---|---|---|
MWD | 1,238 | 535 | -703 |
PVID | 541 | 353 | -188 |
Yuma (California side) | 61 | 40 | -21 |
IID | 3,153 | 2,562 | -591 |
CVWD | 331 | 346 | 15 |
other | 42 | 16 | -26 |
Total | 5,366 | 3,852 | -1,514 |
Data in thousands of acre feet.
Less than California’s 4.4 maf allocation? Is the difference stored or is it IID water sold to mwd and sdcwa?
Jay –
Yes, California’s been under 4.4maf every year since 2016 inclusive. Much of the unused part of the apportionment has been banked in Lake Mead.
